On his way, Matthews lost control of his patrol car. Investigators said he ran off the right shoulder, over corrected, and flipped his car into a ditch. Matthews died at the scene. Before Matthews became a deputy he worked as detention officer. Butler said Matthews put himself through school and became a deputy eight months ago.
