Officers arrived around 6 p.m. at the home of Jeffery Lynn Wolf, 60, in the 8000 block of Norborne, responding to calls that shots were being fired randomly into the street.

Wolf was irate and began shooting at the officers when they arrived, hitting Makowski. Makowski was struck in the face and neck as he took cover behind a neighbor's home. The suspect continued firing towards Corporal Makowski's position, preventing other officers from removing him from the location. The suspect was finally shot and killed by responding swat team returning fire, fatally injuring Wolf. He was taken to Garden City Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Makowski grew up in Dearborn Heights and was the son of a city police officer.

Corporal Makowski had served with the Dearborn Heights Police Department for 11 years.
